| Get Paid For Proofreading Make £500pwk Proofreading For 100's Of UK Publishers. |
Qualified proofreaders and editors earn £15-£22 an hour. NOW you can learn the skills of proofreading and editing from the comfort of your own home, with our 11-part home-study course...
My name is John Hamilton. For the last twenty-plus years I have been fortunate enough to earn a good income as a full-time freelance proofreader and editor. I work from the comfort of my luxury home in Hertfordshire for a variety of clients.
My work arrives by post or (sometimes) e-mail. As long as the work is completed by the agreed deadlines, I can do it when I want, where I want. I usually have at least £2,000 of cheques awaiting payment. I don’t suppose I’ll ever be a millionaire (I like spending money too much!), but my partner and I enjoy two foreign holidays a year, and I have a brand new Mercedes convertible standing on my front drive.
The Publishing Industry Needs New Proofreaders!
Well, there is no way I can cope with all the work out there on my own! For a start, the publishing industry expects to bring out over 100,000 new books this year. That means the total amount to be paid to freelances for checking proofs (proofreading) and editing manuscripts (copy editing) will run into many millions of pounds. On top of that, there are PR and advertising agencies, large and small companies, law firms, colleges and universities, local and national government organisations, and many more - all crying out for the services of freelance proofreaders and copy editors.
And it gets better still! For economic reasons, many publishing houses are cutting back on their in-house staff. But manuscripts still have to be edited and proofread. And who do you think will do that? The good old freelance, of course - me and (I hope) you. In addition, the whole new field of electronic publishing is opening up, covering floppy disks, CD-ROMs, the Internet, company intranets, and more. This alone is an area of truly massive potential. And freelances are needed to copy edit and proofread the material published in it.
Are you starting to get the picture? The need for freelance proofreaders and copy editors has NEVER been greater - and demand is certain to go on growing. Believe me, publishers and editors are desperate for the assistance of capable freelances.
But - and here’s the crunch! - to get a slice of the action, you MUST have the necessary skills and training. In the past, that was the big Catch-22 - how did you get the skills without actually working in the trade yourself? But now, with the help of this course and my friends at Maple Academy, YOU TOO can get all the training and experience you need in order to join the ranks of successful, home-based proofreaders and editors.
You A Professional Proofreader And Editor...?
You don't have to be Brain of Britain (I'm certainly not!) to be a freelance proofreader and editor. Essentially, all you need are three things:
- An eye for detail
- An interest in working with words
- The willingness to learn the skills required
An eye for detail is especially important in proofreading, where you have to scan through pages of text, line by line, word by word, looking for spelling mistakes, typos, faulty punctuation, factual mistakes, and so on. You need to have good concentration, and be conscientious and thorough.
An interest in working with words is crucial for a copy editor, as his/her work involves not only checking for errors, but rearranging copy (words) to ensure that it reads well, fits the publisher’s house style, and (of course!) makes sense. Copy editing is more demanding than proofreading, but usually better paid.
This comprehensive course covers both skills, as one leads naturally on to the other. However, if by the end you feel that you would prefer to leave copy editing to others, you can still make a very good living (or sideline income) as a professional proofreader.
